you can get a standard savings account with INGdirect, earns about 5% interest, no minimums, and you can pull your money out anytime you want.

I use HSBC Direct. Right now it is at 3.55 percent interest. I joined when it was up at 5.5 percent but as the Fed as lowered interest rates it has gone down. It is FDIC insured.

Online Savings, Online Payment and Online CD Accounts, HSBC Direct

Ok I went with this bank dbabe. I like the fact that I was able to setup automatic deposits on a weekly basis without having to go through loops to do so at work. Thanks for everyones insights. It is at 3.4% right now but that seems to be pretty darn close to what a few other high interest accounts are at right now.

yeah, i've had emigrantdirect.com for a while now. had it when it was 5.5% but it's down to 3.6%. same thing as ing pretty much. just one thing you should know, it does take a couple days to get money from the account. like 2-3 days after you initiate a transfer and from what i've read there are fed regulations on this type of an account that says you can't withdrawl more than a certain amount of times in a month. as far as i know there's no limit in the amount you take out though

you are correct. I am not worried about 2 or 3 days necessarily because it will take longer than that for someone like a furnace mechanic to actually cash a check. I believe the limit was 10 withdraws per month but cant remember without looking. I have no intentions of withdrawing anything unless I absolutely need the $$$.

I use Scottrade for all my investing. Besides stocks they also have bonds and mutual funds (plus a lot of really risky stuff I stay away from). They are insured and cheap!

They have local offices if you need them, but you can do almost everything on line. Online Discount Brokers, Online Stock Trading, Stock Investing, Mutual Funds, IRA - Scottrade Check out their products and services tab

We do keep some cash in a savings account just in case however, for the same reason you are talking about....

Yeah I am kinda set on "retirement" accounts but thanks for the link . Never know someday I may get to the golden "3 months savings" eventually and want to start putting $$$ into other areas.
