Yupper, both local TV stations had streaming live video. I could see the smoke, only about 3 miles away.
What that story on CNN didn't report - the chopper had the pilot and FAA official onboard, doing touch and go landings on the hospital helipad. For some reason, after the chopper took off from the pad, it quickly rotated and the rear rotor hit the radio tower near the pad, then it went down on its side, partially on the pad.
The pilot was the most experienced pilot operating the local AeroMed helicopters. So he was probably getting re-certified for landing on the hospital with patients. The fire was out within 30 minutes, the chopper is barely the shape of a chopper, mostly melted metal now. The pilot and FAA guy got out and climbed down onto another roof level to escape the heat and smoke, they only had minor injuries. I'm sure we will hear more later about what caused the chopper to suddenly rotate.
