Personally I'd say it's a good thing. When I graduated from college all we had campus interviews and beyond that we could buy newspapers, cold call and send letters. I was interested in places that weren't coming to recruit at MTU so I sent 150-200 letters/resumes out. At one point I had a bale of FOADs from power companies out west (close to good trout fishing). I estimate that of the letters I sent I received zilch from 30%, FOADs from 68% and 2% positive response. Not such a great method for job searching for when you consider all the (beer) money I spent on good paper, stamps and envelopes not to mention all the (beer drinking) time that it took to address all of those!
