ATI 4850 Fan/temperature work around

Found these articles on the net that explain how to increase the fan speed manually, until a fix comes out from ATI, or Riva Tuner gets updated later this month.

First article I found: http://techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=60036

which lists these: HD 4870 Fan-Control, Easy Workaround, Lowered My Temps 30C - PC Perspective Forums

You're gonna love this and I'd love to take credit for it, but someone else came up with it. I wouldn't be surprised if the person worked for ATI either as it was his first post. Anyway, I'll cut to the chase. All you need to do is change just two values in the XML which is attached to an ATI Profile you created. I tried this and it worked perfectly, other than the noise generated by 65% fan speed as suggested. I'll experiment later. But it works and easy as anything. I edited his instructions just a hair though. See below ....

http://forums.guru3d.com/showpost.ph...69&postcount=8

Make a profile in catalyst after turning on Overdrive and make sure clock and memory settings are correct.

For Vista

Then go to the following location and open the following file for editing "C:\Users\Your Windows ID\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Your CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

For XP

Then go to the following location and open the following file for editing "C:\Documents and Settings\Your Windows ID\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Your CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

Now go down the page until you see the following lines in the XML file ...

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="23" />

Change the "Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value=" from "Automatic" to "Manual"

Then change "Property name="Want" value=" from "23" to your desired fan speed.

Save the file then reload the Profile you just edited in the CCC.

You will have to select the profile everytime you re-start the computer.

Edit:

After experimenting with my HIS HD 4870 I found a fan-speed of 40% works best for me. My temps went from 79C at idle to 49C, and now 47C after settling in.

Backed off Fan to 35% and still at only 48C. I'll take it.

2nd link listed on first page:
AMD's Radeon HD 4000 series graphics cards are impressive on most fronts, but, they're a touch hotter than most users would like - particularly the single-slot Radeon HD 4850.
The heat-factor isn't helped by AMD's lacklustre automatic fan control. Up until now, users have been unable to manually control the speed of their fans.
That, however, is no longer the case as a forum user going by the name of bretware over at Guru3D has provided a useful workaround that'll let users manually control their card's fan speed, and consequently lower temperatures.
According to bretware, a user needs to follow these simple steps:
  1. <LI itxtvisited="1">In Catalyst Control Centre, make sure clock and memory settings are correct and turn on Overdrive <LI itxtvisited="1">Create a Catalyst Control Centre profile called "fanspeed" <LI itxtvisited="1">Navigate to C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\ and you'll find an XML file titled "fanspeed", open the file in Notepad or your preferred editor. The file should resemble the following:

    <Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
    <Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
    </Feature>
    <Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
    <Property name="Want" value="0" />
    </Feature>
    <Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
    <Property name="Want" value="65" />

    <LI itxtvisited="1">As shown above, change the "FanSpeedAlgorithm" value to Manual and the "FanSpeedPercentTarget" value to 65 (or your preferred fan speed in percentage)
  2. Save the file and reload the "fanspeed" profile in Catalyst Control Centre.
If you're unable to locate the XML file, you may be required to set your operating system to show hidden/system files.
Bretware adds that "you may have to select the profile everytime you start the computer, but it will work until there is a fix or better info so i can figure how to change the auto target temp".
Eager adopters of bretware's fix have already reported drops in temperature of up to 30°C when running their fans at 65 - 70 per cent. We haven't yet had the opportunity to put the workaround to the test, but if you happen to be running one of AMD's latest-greatest and plan on manually configuring your fan speed, let us know how you get on in our forums.
