why a vw? They aren't the most reliable vehicles.
I've driven the Mazda3, sweet car and same vehicle segment as the GLI

A guy I work with has a 05 Passat not sure which model and he has had a lot of electrical problems. The service guys told him that was normal for VW's but they are great vehicles once the bugs are worked out. I thought that was a strange comment when I heard it, but thats what he said I personally dont have any experience with them

The thing with German cars is you've got to buy them in Germany for them to be worth a damn. You can't leave a car beautifully crafted by German engineers to be built by American auto buffoons.
As for what Lopo said, my brother has a Mazda 3 and really likes it. Unfortunately, some *** decided to walk over it and now his roof is dented

I've just known enough people with 2000+ VW's, Jetta's, Bettle's, GLI's, and even had a friend that worked in their service department to know that I will never ever buy a VW, they may be nice looking, but not worth the maintenance nightmare.

I will take that into concideration lopo, thx for the advice .... is there any specific reasons? i know the electronics side is usually hit or miss, my sister has an 02 jetta, my other sister just bought an 07 bug, havnt seen many problems with them yet.
I have also been looking at possibly either a Subaru Impreza WRX or Legacy 2.5 GT Sedan

My bro-in-law has a 2 or 3 year old Jetta.
I love the feel of the car. .. Very responsive,
nice handling, and he's had no problems with it
(and he drives the snot out of it)
Two bum cracks up !!

I test drove a WRX back before I got my RX8 and I even test drove a Jetta VR6..., anyways the WRX was a sweet car. The legacy is also nice, Subi's are popular here in Reno because of the snow, they are great in the snow.
Here's LoPo's list to consider:
Mazda3 - Driven and raced, both the sedan and Hatchback. Good Stuff
Mazda6 - Driven and test driven on autoX course, pretty sweet car.
Subaru WRX - Driven. Good Shizzle. Go STi if you can swing it.
Also, the SCION TC is a nice car and look for their new remake of the xA, dubbed the xD - follows the GLI look.
Honda Civic - Driven, still the same basic Civic
