New Gas radio car
Ok I was just given a Gas powered RC car that supposedly does 70mph. The guy gave it to me saying "If you can fix it you can have it". I am going tommarow to go get some gas for it but apparently he tries to start it and it wants to start but it doesnt. Any ideas as to exactly what I should look at as the culprit? I was thinking maybe the stator motor might be bad but not positive.
*edit
I have to go to Grand Rapids for the nearest RC store cause all the ones around me closed down =[.

hmm well thats what I was thinking was the motor (I said stator motor). 50-100 for a free 480 car isnt a bad deal imo .

Is it a Traxxas? Ryders Hobby in GR has some good people, they will know the answer.

If it is an alcohol/nitro engine (glow), Ryders will have the fuel for it.
There is also a hobby shop at Rockford exit, turn left across Algoma & there is a strip mall there with hobby shop. He has lots of Traxxis parts. Prolly a little far for you, but another source.
Also, online go to towerhobbies.com. They also carry an extensive parts inventory for the Traxxis cars both electric and fuelers.

Blong.... I've played with Gas RC for a while... 95% of the problems are Poorly kept conditions after every use. If this person didn't do the after run care and cleaning. You would just have to Strip out the engine. Clean all the congealed crap from Carb and Piston Chamber then set to Specs from Manufacture. Whether its an AUTO START or Pull start be sure Glow Plug is good. just get a new one only about 4 bucks.
Here two ways to force a start quickly if engine is in working order.
#1 try and prime the gas lines to carb first by whatever means you can. Via return line from exhaust or a prime pump built into tank.
#2 HOLD finger over exhaust pipe and start the engine. Back pressure forces the gas in the line faster then normal. Don't hold it to much you might flood the chamber then you have to pull the plug and dry the compression chamber.
Its my opinion - the carb probably needs to be re-tuned and cleaned.
be sure to get correct gas. Most cars like 20% Nitro but find out what the guy was using. You shouldn't be mixing to much...

I suspect fouling as well, but I'm no expert.
Bring it to the shop with you Blong, and get
some 'friendly' advice.

thats the car minus the top cause the top is missing. If I can clean the motor out that will be good because I just found out somehow my van got damaged really badly underneath (I never hit nothing so someone had to of hit me) and have to have body work done on it. that and the oil sensor misfired and had to be replaced. Bah good thing I have insurance and a low deductable.

Wow thanks mac. the one I got is COVERED in black carbon on the outside so it just may be filled on the inside as well. I need to look up manufactures specifications. The car is a Duratrax Axis looks to be model number sx-205 and what the faq on it says is the same thing you just said Mac .

Hey mac how hard should it be to turn the flywheel when the cam is at the top of its rotation? I turn it to the top and it gets really really hard to turn past that point.

thats just the high end compression side.... It should be a little tight but not tight enough that it stops the rotation totally. Sometimes it gets confusing, consider that that piston is in constant motion. if you spin it keep going. if it makes it by with some tension you are good to go. Its a good thing. once it heats up it won't be that tight.
Get some after running oil too. Take it all apart and get some parts cleaner fluid and soak the engine. Once its clean wash it out with some of the used gas you have... Its a lubricant too. be sure to wipe and get as much as the crap and cleaner out.
