The problem is that no consumer application is written to take advantage of that many cores let alone 2 or 4.
Windows licensing = sockets soul.

They stuck with it for Vista, so they must not be too worried.
The 80 core design is really about the communication technology more than anything, hopefully such designs will get Intel on the ball on that common system interface they've been working on for what seems like forever.

Vista isn't really what I am thinking about, I am thinking about the server market, I would expect that to change at some point, but if it doesn't then good, in the end it doesn't matter to me as I don't have to bother with servers anymore!

We are probably going to purchase a new workstation for fluid analysis processing. I priced out a HP XW8400 workstation with dual quad-core Xeon processors and 32GB RAM . So this workstation aught to fly!
