CPU Cooler???

I'm considering a 3rd party CPU cooler for my Intel Core 2 DUO E6420 LGA 775.

Any suggestions, information, or discussions would be appreciated.

I have a Thermaltake copper fin with fan speed controller on my existing P4, 2.2, socket 478. Was a b!tch to get the thing mounted and working right, but really helped cool things down. The stock fan just wasn't cutting it in my opinion.

I'm not an OCer, but still wondering if I should do something similar on my new CPU???

I always go for as much cooling as I can get. I'm even considering liquid cooling at this point, although the idea of liquid and computers just don't mix in my mind

How much are you willing to spend? The best air coolers are very good, the Tuniq Tower 120 and the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme are very good, but are around the $60 range. The Tuniq is probably slightly better depending on the fan you purchase for the Ultra-120. The Ultra-120 is $60~ without a fan, and then a good fan from say Scythe will run you around another $8 (120mm). Both are extremely quiet and perform very very good though. They are VERY large and employ a tun of heatpipes.

If you're not looking to spend that much Arctic Cooling offers the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro for $35 at Newegg. This is the heatsink I use and is very good. Its very quiet and is basically a somewhat minture version of the popular tower heatsinks (like the two above). If you're not going to do any OCing I might just go with this, high quality, cheaper, and and will do the job fine.

You could do water cooling, but you need to spend $300~ to do it right and I would stay away from kits except for those from Zalman, Swiftech, and a few others, either way they're going to cost.

Thanks Chem.

I really like the design of the Artic Freezer 7 Pro without considering price even.

You can't beat it if it is both cheap and good. I like the 6 year parts and labor warranty too. I don't think I have ever had a system 6 years anyway.

I just can't get myself motivated to do the liquid cooling. It would be interesting to rig up, but for the way I use a system, it is not necessary.

I have the AF 7 pro and love it... Works well and has improved the temps by a few degrees and keeps it stable under loaded conditions.

Its been just over 5 months... I opened up the machine cause I noticed a very slight temp change. noticed some dust buildup in the fins... enough to inhibit the flow of air to the fins. Cleaned it out and all back to where it was.. Its worth the money in my book

Running a Intel 6600... And soon to maybe be a quad core.. Still pondering the upgrade..

Mac it might be a lot easier, just for note Intel will be releasing a Quad core Core 2 in July that's going to retail for $266. DAMN cheap for a Quad core, I'm tempted myself but don't really have a use for one and would rather purchase a new video card to go alone with my E6300.

Mac, what temp ranges are you seeing for your 6600?

With my 6600, stock Intel H/F in my XClio Windtunnel case (pics and discussion here), I idle at about 30C and under full load (running Seti @ Home, 100% CPU, both cores) it is at about 58C.
