ts is free for non-comercial use.

from here: TeamSpeak - FAQ

Quote:
If you host a TeamSpeak server strictly for non-profit AND you are not a commercial entity then you will not be subject to licensing fees. You must not exceed a total of 1000 slots on a maximum of 10 TeamSpeak servers within your organization. TeamSpeak servers are defined as ANY server upon which a connection is allowed - be it virtual or physical.

Examples of non-profit entities:

* An individual hosting a single TeamSpeak server configured to allow up to 100 slots for their online gaming clan for non-profit.
* An individual hosting 10 TeamSpeak servers with 100 slots each but does NOT ask for fees, does not advertise, or receive any sort of compensation or benefits for doing so.
* An individual that rents a dedicated server from a hosting company but does NOT ask for fees from clan members AND does NOT rent or share space on their TeamSpeak server to others for profit.
* A church or other non-profit organization hosting a free TeamSpeak server for online bible study discussions.
* A school hosting one TeamSpeak server over 10 physical machines, each configured to allow no more than 100 slots and is completely free of charge to students, allowing them to receive help with homework for their classes online.

Thanks Mimic, maybe it is time to switch to TS?

I have not used TS in years, back when not every OF could run the client successfully, any known problems with it now?

hummm... I hate TS.

I have had experience in the past with the new version Vent servers that they can host up to 12 folks at a time for roughly $6 a month (more or less- but that's ballpark) with the 'nice' codex. Having more folks able to connect won't cost too much more....

Having both versions of Vent on one computer works fine (seperate folder installs/diff names - you all know the drill), but each version won't hold/retain their password lists in their server connection info if both are installed, and of course, both can not run at the same time (silly wabbits...)

so..Big deal, if you run two versions, make a list and hide the pw's somewhere....'Buncha technically advanced guys like you all could surely surmount such trivial little details, eh?

Quote:
interesting people dont join the old server yet there are quite often 8+ people on vent. all thats required to have to clents open is a -m switch added to the shortcut. Then again its us old farts that are on it lol.
What -old- server are you talking about, Blong? Are you referring to the Vent I usually am on (oldfart.com)..? If so, for a -long while- I've seen only 3 people on most weeknights 5-10pm, then maybe 3-4people later in the night playing UT. That's it. Only once or twice recently there has been more than 3 people, but never more than 8 on -and playing anything- during prime time weeknights. As for after 11pm or so weeknights...? who knows...

I have had both clients installed before and it worked fine, just saying that there are people that don't want to bother with both. I know of 3 just such people off the top of my head.

I have used Team Speak in the past and it worked very well, but I haven't had any problems with vent either, I for some reason just like the setup of Team Speak better, can't say for sure why that is.

I would be happy to load it up on the server that is running actf and qw:et if people will use it.

Team Speak or new Vent = block on the front page with current users.
Old vent = no block on front page.

to me teamspeak is to cluttered. Venda yes the oldfart one as the last week I have seen 8+ on. Its not everyday that this occurs but there are times where it does. But now that mimic posted about free TS maybe its time for us to switch to TS. I dont have a problem using it and it never crash's/screws up for me when I do use it but it just seems cluttered. It also takes a bit more to understand all the settings you can use whereas vent is just straight forward.

hmmm .. what have I started ?!

my thoughts:

- Pay for something that is otherwise free? .. NEVER
- TS over Vent? .. I prefer Vent because it announces the player's names
as opposed to just saying 'Player connected'. Otherwise, they seem to
have similar voice quality, tho I've always been suspicious that TS is
ever so slightly more bloated/bandwidth consuming than the old Vent.

I'll go with the majority on this one.
