Please describe TF2 gameplay style
I've looked at the TF2 videos, but it is hard to get enough play style details. I did notice rocket jumps in one video, so that kinda pushed me back on liking this game. So please give me some details as to game play speed, game objectives, common tactics, etc.
Basically is TF2 more like another game for play style -- IE: Q2, BF2, SoF2, UT99, etc.

If I was to give the best comparison from the past at least from my point of playing games.
It feels like Quake 1 with a splash of all the others. Very fast paced. Not to confuse though with class speed. Your class has a speed value there is no sprint.
Example. Scout class: Super fast, lowest armor
Heavy weapons guy: slowest, highest armor.
everyone else fits in between those.
Other then that its pretty much what you see. Tricks like rocket jump and grenade jump are nice and you pay for it in damage you take. Only bonus is (If you can script) Old quake 1 rocket jumps (tweaking the script) can minimize the damage you take. Been working on this and almost have it to the minimum damage to take. Most people can steal or write the scripts today but, I value the old school days. Most of us understand the timing withing the script equation better. Most just map keys to make it work. The ms timing delay is the key.
Play style and game play... This is where I think they did it right. nothing is overly complex about it. To think about the game another way... K.I.S.S applies to this game and I think they did a good job with it. I won't say the game doesn't need tweaking. It could use a little but, nothing like some of the other games I have dealt with.
It helps to get a team or a partner to work with. While you can go and solo in game play usually its only good for doing DM style. Unless your a spy and then you wanna be solo.
Its a smooth game. everything feel right for size and scale.
The hook over all for me was the look. I was getting tired of all the realism in games and this is a good way to bring the simple way of graphics to a Highend graphics card world. Machine wise since its still working off the original hl2 engine it won't kill you graphics card.
I've ALWAYS complained about games in the past. Something wrong with this.. Something wrong with that.... This is the first one I have nothing to complain about. My only disappointment was the lack of maps after 10 years in the works... However with Valve giving use sdk tools soon for this new maps will be around the corner. You can see maps popping up now.
Price wise for me.. The Orange box deal back during beta was the key. 44 dollars was worth it without a doubt even though I had hl2 and episode 1. All those little extras was well worth the value and not to mention if you already have some of the games in your steam account you can give out or (sell) friends as a gift so it doesn't goto waste.

I'm not sure how to describe what it is I like about the game, I just like it !
I like the fact the game went for a more humurous approach, and that was
accomplished by the look (cartoony), by the look and style of weapons (exxagerated), and by the sounds in the game. I honestly laugh in this game
when things get nuts and you hear war-cries and screams, and humourous taunts.
The gameplay is either CTF (where you grab the enemie's attache case) and
some kind of Control Point/Domination thingy. Both are my preferred styles in Multiplayer
gaming, and are done well.
As I said, I'm not sure what exactly it is that I like, but I just like it.
Weapons feel good, physics are good, and I laugh a lot.

Are you folks downloading this game thru Steam, or getting it at stores? I see the stand-alone game available thru Steam for $29, and the Orange box appears to be the only thing listed at store websites and NewEgg . . .
If thru Steam, how big a download is it?

I got it thru Steam, but the heck if I can remember how big it was.
I decided to go just for the game. I wasn't interested in anything
in the Orange Box except for an extra HL2 key (for REDEEMER to
geek out on CamperStrike while I do TF2).
It appears that the game installed is about 2 gig, and I think
(tho I could be wrong) that the install was ~1.4 gigs packed.

I bought the Orange Box at Wal-Mart for $50 mainly because I didn't want to download it (I have a relatively slow DSL connection). The Orange Box has two DVDs and that includes HL2, EP1, EP1, Portal, and TF2. I'm going to say TF2 is around 2.5GB (rough estimate) in size. Steam has always maxed out my conection however, though not sure how busy it is (I'm sure its died down a little) right now on their servers.
Just to throw in my opinion about gameplay:
I really like TF2 because each class lets me play the game differently and still have a highly active role. Even the defensive positions really give you a sense to putting a lot forward to the team. This is because of how the capture and defend mechanic works and the great importance of choke points in TF2. The game really focuses around high and low points of each team and capitalizing on those.
My personal favorite classes at this point are the Solider and Spy. The Solider lets me get into combat and focus on taking out engineers sentries and suppression of the opposing force. Where as the Spy allows me to work my way behind enemy lines and take out their key players, such as a medic who might get a Ubercharge (temporary invulnerability for him and his current healing target) off soon.

I seems fast paced to me, at least on control maps. a dash to the Control Point and then theres a massive firefight. Sure to be a hoot at the LANs but not really my game.
*****
Even though it feels simialr to BF's, ETQW plays more to my pace and I also really liked the Call of Duty 4 demo.

The orginal quake in entertaining, high quality graphics cartoon style is not a bad description.
Like Dudio, I play it for the fun value more then anything.
Good teamplay can really make a difference in this game, which I like.

Smiley I played it on the xbox 360 and it feels like Serious Sam with a mixture of Quake. Pretty entertaining. The graphics remind me of Serious Sam but the actual play is like quake .
