update on the car

because im sure you allll wanted to know what has been consuming my free time and money this summer. here's a pictoral timeline of the engine thus far...all thats left is to adjust the valves and put the valve cover on and the engine is done. then i have to pull out the old one, re-wire to convert obd0 to obd1, drop the new engine in, and then pray to god that nothing blows up and the engine starts up ok...then i have to tune it and break it in for 2k miles. all in three weeks before school starts, fun fun. anyway, here's the pics

the lucky car:

stripped block:

stripped head:

parts pile:

my attempt at a fancy pic of one of the piston/rod assemblies:

heres everything all clean:

another attempt at a fancy pic of the valve springs and rockers:

everything altogether thus far:

so yeah, thats all i've done so far, been a lot of fun and i cant wait to get this thing in the car and running. i've learned a ton about engines while doing this, its basically an almost like new engine. i've replaced pistons for higher compression, new springs, retainers, main/rod bearings, and all new seals. head has been ported and polished and after i get everything running well and broken in i'm going to upgrade the cam, headers and intake side of things. been a fair amount of money, but everything for this engine is pretty cheap since its only sohc and most honda ppl go for the bigger, more powerful dohc b16s. i figured for the amount i'd have to pay to drop a b16 in, i could spend the same on this and have enough for upgrades and body/paint work. as im sure you can see, the car is not in the greatest shape on the outside at the moment. thats next summer's project, lol.

parts pile has dwindled to a much smaller pile now. just has all the stuff that goes on the outside, the alternator, distributor, flywheel and clutch.

i cant really. in order to test an engine outside of a car you have to have a lot of things hooked up. i cranked it with a drill though and it all moves right and turns as easy as it should under full compression. my dad wanted to see if we could get something to sping the engine enough to build up oil pressure so we could see any leaks before putting it into the car but the drill isnt turning it fast enough. no reason why any of it shouldnt work though. the engine is the simplistic part, im more worried about the wiring getting messed up. i have a lot of pre-made wires to make it easier, but still gonna be interesting.

yeah, the only seal we're really worried about is the rear main. we didnt read when we were taking things apart and we just pounded the old main out but we were supposed to measure how far out it was from the back and put the new one in leaving the same gap. it had a standard amount to put it in if you didnt measure, so thats what we did, but theres no telling if it'll hold and if it doesnt it's a huge pita to fix after the engine is in the car (read: dropping the tranny, oilpan, crankshaft...)

my dad got the biggest drill he could from the machine shop he's working with right now but it wasnt turning more than 100 rpm, probably less, wasnt fast at all, but at least i know the valves clear the pistons. that was one of the things i was worried about since it's a little bit higher dome than the stock ones. im hoping to have this all done by the end of the week, we'll see how that works out.

and dudio, i have a pic on my phone that someone took at some point, but thats it. i'll work on it for you
