The minimum wage debate
At present minimum wage is below the poverty level.
http://csmonitor.com/2005/0603/p01s04-usec.html
Quote:
"We see it as the government arbitrarily determining a wage issue, and we believe that is better left to market forces," says Marc Freedman, director of labor-law policy at the US Chamber of Commerce. "What we see is that it's routinely used as an introductory or training wage. People who start don't stay there long. They're quickly promoted."
But advocates for low-income workers, particularly immigrants, say that's not always the case and many families are dependent on minimum-wage jobs for their income. Currently, 30 million Americans are in low-wage jobs that pay less than the poverty rate for a family of four.

i will always be of the opinion that you get paid according to how well you work. i started ihop making $6.50 and 2 and a half years later i was making $9. i was one of the hardest workers there and i got the benefits. working that job has opened my eyes to the whole poverty thing. the GM there used to be a big time drug dealer in a gang in petersburg. he was arrested at 18 and did 10 years. started working at ihop and decided to turn his life around...he was promoted to shift leader, then a couple months later, promoted to night manager, then assistant manager for a long time. they tried to give him the GM position at numerous other locations for a year but he wanted to stay at this store and eventually he became GM there. it's all about how hard you work...you dont even need a high school diploma to do this, so i wouldnt think immigrants would have that much trouble. the guys ive seen that come into ihop to work are slackers though, they do as little as possible to get the job done, which is why they arn't paid as much. simple as that

I would have to agree with you because working at McDonalds I was one of the hardest workers there. For example in drive thru they have a 90s or less per car policy waiting in line. Before I quite my avg was 76s. This was during lunch hour which is the busiest time of the day. I would make the people in the grill area mad at me because I would make sandwiches I needed for an order because they were to slow. I saw alot of people working who just dont care about their jobs or the fact that they even have one. I never truly understood why someone would want to mooch off the government till recently. I mean where else in the world can you live where the government pays you to not have a job, go fishing all day, and live with your mother? Where else could you have a girlfriend that you got pregnant give you 75% of her paycheck so you can go fishing and have fun while she works her butt off giving excuses (lame at that) as to why you dont have a job yet. I have a hard time going to fast food restaurants because the people dont care, mess up your order all the time, and well could give a rats arse about their employer and its customers. sorry ill stop ranting now .

I wouldn't have a problem with an introductory or training wage that is slghtly below the minimum. If a person is hired into an industry in which they have no past experience and the duration of the training period is no greater than two weeks, it should be workable.
