Gamer kills fellow player

SHANGHAI, China (AP) â€” An online gamer was sentenced to death after murdering a fellow player â€” in real life â€” in a dispute over a virtual weapon used in a fantasy game, a news report said Wednesday.

Qiu Chengwei, 41, was found guilty of stabbing to death Zhu Caoyuan, a fellow player of a popular game called Legend of Mir III, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

His sentence was suspended for two years by Shanghaiâ€™s No. 2 Intermediate Peopleâ€™s Court and could be reduced to 15 years in prison with good behaviour, Xinhua said.

Qiu confronted Zhu in February after learning that he sold the virtual weapon lent to him by Qiu. Qiu reported the loss of the Dragon Sabre to police but was told it wasnâ€™t real property protected by the law.

Prosecutors said Zhu promised to hand over the 7,200 yuan, the equivalent of about $870 US, that he received but Qiu grew impatient and attacked Zhu at his home, stabbing him repeatedly in the chest. Qiu surrendered to police and claimed he didnâ€™t mean to kill Zhu.

Often violent online fantasy games are hugely popular in China, attracting tens of millions of players.

A court official, Chen Zhongyi, said he was unable to confirm the sentence or other details of the case.

Xinhua quoted the victimâ€™s father Zhu Caoyuan, Zhu Huimin, as saying the family would appeal.

Zhu â€œwas sleeping when Qiu broke into his home. He was barely able to put on his pants before Qiu stabbed him,â€ Zhu Huimin was quoted as saying.

â€œWe want Qiu to die, and immediately,â€ Zhu said.

Another blow to video games...sigh....

Hopefully people will understand this type of thing was more of a transactional incident rather than an actual video game causing people to do harm..

There have been a couple of stories of people losing their minds playing EverQuest.

One guy got so into it, he quit his job and play basically 24/7 accumulated quite a bit of stuff then got jumped by a gang and lost everything he accumulated. He was so distraught he comitted suicide.

Another guy got so mad, he picked up his son and threw him to the floor killing him...

It always seems to happen to people playing Ever Quest or other MMORPG and hardly ever fps.

Because people take MMORPG's way over board. I remember readin about a kid that killed himself because he died in d2... I mean come on, im not one to upset people but.... One less moron in the world?...
