damn yo

this documentary is fascinating
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...hl=undefine d
i've always enjoyed the odd sci-fi show but this realy puts things into perspective
those far-out time travel/parallel universe ideas aren't so unbelievable anymore
kind of excited to see what happens in the coming years

my question is, could you travel to the past by orbiting around a black hole that's star had collapsed before his father's death and meet him?
if our own constructed time machine only works from the point you turn it on, could a black hole older than his fathers death work?

but then if you could and did, would you meet the father in a parallel universe that doesn't conform to this ones rules, and thus avoid the paradox?
in that case, i guess it wouldn't really be time travel but tanscending our universe's boundaries
and might explain why he hasn't already saved his fathers life in this universe

quantum mechanics is weird

If I could time travel, I would travel back to 1992 and kidnap myself the day of my wedding. I would smack the sh1t out of me, but I would return myself. My ex would think I was crazy and not marry me. I would live happily ever after.

Dr. Mac sez...

There are alot of other factors you have to think about in Quantum Mechanics to even consider goofing around with time travel. Things like Slingshot around Large Massive Black-holes or Neutron Stars is a little unrealistic for us. Problem is the gravity is so great that you would be crushed into nothingness leaving only matter/energy. For example. If you look at some things you learn back in High school

If you weight 100 pounds on earth...
you'd weight about:
17 lbs on the Moon.
257 lbs on Jupiter.
3600 or so pounds on the sun.
3.x Trillion pounds on a neutron Star....
Keeping that in mind the centripetal force is also acting if you were to slingshot.. Who the hell even knows what those forces produce.
The only way to actually travel using huge gravity wells is to convert your body into matter/energy then back once your where you need to go.

I did some research awhile back for my Astrophysics Class in College and what we turned up is that at this point we are to Fragile as beings to get to such high speeds without killing ourselves atomically. It could happen but, you have to overcome so much force that your atoms would be scattered all over the universe. Looking now from that last x-men 3 movie you'd basically become what Phoenix does to everyone in the end of the movie "disintegration".

ah yeah
the energy involved is nearly inconceivable
but that theory is fascinating

it's amazing the distance we've come in the science world

My take on time travel:

I don't think its possible to physically travel to another time but to see it. everything we do must leave a energy signature and is recorded in time. I think there will be a way someday to read that energy and translate it on a computer and see what happened at that place and at that time... I don't think we can travel into the future though.. just "see" the past ..
