DSL speed can vary greatly. In my area the speeds range from 6mb/768kb to 1.5/384kb. If you live in town you receive the fastest speeds and the farther you move out the slower it is (I have the 1.5). From what others have told me and articles the average DSL speed is somewhere around 768kb/128kb which is really rather sad. The local cable company has horrible service here with a speed of 1mb/128kb, the reliability is also poor. Generally people go with DSL unless they are to far from town and then must go with cable, dial up, or satellite.
On the note of fiber, it should be more widespread in use. The government has been feeding the Telco's for some years now but real work has just now started. Hopefully over the coming years people will realize that in order to be part of the digital age and grow in that area that you must invest in it. The US in now 24th in broadband penetration. While certainly the geography in the US does pose issues, it is still rather poor.
