DSL speed can vary greatly. In my area the speeds range from 6mb/768kb to 1.5/384kb. If you live in town you receive the fastest speeds and the farther you move out the slower it is (I have the 1.5). From what others have told me and articles the average DSL speed is somewhere around 768kb/128kb which is really rather sad. The local cable company has horrible service here with a speed of 1mb/128kb, the reliability is also poor. Generally people go with DSL unless they are to far from town and then must go with cable, dial up, or satellite.

On the note of fiber, it should be more widespread in use. The government has been feeding the Telco's for some years now but real work has just now started. Hopefully over the coming years people will realize that in order to be part of the digital age and grow in that area that you must invest in it. The US in now 24th in broadband penetration. While certainly the geography in the US does pose issues, it is still rather poor.

Been on fiber at home for 7 months now. I never had a problem with my last DSL provider though. Fiber is still nice, just waiting for the TV over Fiber service to be kicked on late this year or early '08. DVR 4 HD channels at once boyyeee.

Thumbs up

Yeah the DSL I have is topped at 1.5 it just became available out here where I live last week. There were higher speeds available via Bellsouth but for some reason only the lowest two were available here were I live. But its fast enough for me. Plus they gave me a wireless modem as well so I set up a wireless network for my house. Its sweet. Sure beats my old 56k connection with a 4 hour session limit on online time even though it was unlimited access.

I tell you I'm glad I'm at the age I am and went to college when I did... While I do remember having to suffer early on with a 14.4 baud modem I believe that was for 3 months after which college showed me a T1 for over 5 years later opened for a OC3, then graduating only to get a job back at the college which provided me with on campus housing and my own private Fiber line without campus restriction. OH yeah.... Those were the days... Not like this Cable modem DSL crap thats Asyncronous. I can't complain though cause since then Any where that I would move to in NY upstate or local to where I am now has High Speed. As some said, if I had to go back to dialup... I would just sell my computer... and not even bother. Dialup is slower then trying to watch grass grow. Especially with all these nut job Webpages that have everything but the kitchen sink loading... and I'm not even going to address the Gaming aspect. Goes back to what I remember during my original Quake years. Kill all the HPB's
