We looked at SpiceWorks a few weeks ago. Being a free download made me cautious, how would they make money off this product? It installs collection and communication apps on your system when you install it, not a door we want to open up here at work . . .
"From time to time, the Spiceworks Desktop does collect a limited amount of anonymous aggregate information about your computing environment. This information is collected into groups so that it no longer reflects or references an individually identifiable user, device, or software application. No device-specific or software-specific information is stored at Spiceworks."
So this data is probably sold off to earn income, which supports the program. I just don't trust that this is all they might do . . . I'd rather pay for such a tool that does not collect and that sends nothing back to the software vendor/manufacturer.
