PC problem :(

Hey guys... been a while since I talked to most of you. I caught up with a few of you a couple times. You guys still do game nights or anything? Or are there just no new games that are worth getting super excited over?

I picked up Cod4 but I suxx0rz real bad... I played with a few friends but we kind of lost interest. I mostly just play WoW now. My cousin (if anyone remembers him, ParanoidAndroid) went to Iraq and to be honest FPS games just haven't been as fun without him!

I have a huge problem with my computer though, and Chem has helped me as much as he can but we're still not 100% sure what the problem is. The symptoms: when I press the power button, the computer WILL turn on. All the lights and fans start up, however, there is no response from the monitor, the keyboard, or the mouse. It did this a couple times over the past week and Chem had me unplug the power cord, flip the power switch in the back, have it sit for a bit, plug it in and flip the switch again and start it and it worked, but only for a couple days.

We've tried all sorts of unplugging and resetting the power switch and none of that worked. We took out both memory sticks and tested to see if anything would power up in case one was faulty. Then we tried replacing the battery on the motherboard, again nothing.

So I don't know what the problem is... we're looking at either the PSU or motherboard. I guess I'll start with the PSU. I'm buying a new one tonight, hopefully it's not money wasted. I came to post here to see if anyone had any idea what the problem could be that maybe I'm overlooking.

I'd appreciate any input, I know a lot of you work with computers quite a bit or are just general computer hardware gurus!

Thanks a lot

Laura

If it seems like its focused on video I would try another video card even if its a POS 1 meg PCI card just to make sure you can get the machine up and running and then do some of the stuff you had seemed to try. Other then that If you have a PS in question now a days I just use my PS tester. they cost about 15 bucks and can save you ALOT of Grief when your unsure about your PS. Once you know your PS works its all trial by illimination

Lopo's guess was good.
Sounds like you're down to the power supply/mobo/cpu.
Without spares to swap out, it's a gamble which one to
replace.
Have you tried smacking the whole tower onto the floor
from about 6 inches?

I didnt see lopo nor chems response BUT if your keyboard and mouse are both USB you may have lost power to your usb ports which in turn would be a MB problem.

Dudio I tied it to the back of my car and went around the block but it didn't fix it. Y IT NOT WORK???

I did order power supply and motherboard last night so when they get here I'm hoping it's just power supply. If not I'll try the mobo, and if not that... well I guess it is process of elimination by way of cheapest to most expensive to replace!

Thanks for your input.

BTW I want to play cs:s again *cough*

Did anyone try SoFIII?? I thought I read that it came out. OMG throwing knives was so fun.

Had a problem like that on my kids computer yesterday after cleaning out the dustbunnies.

It would not beep and all fans would start turning, etc.

After scratching my head and checking all the wiring, etc. I removed the sound card and it started up fine. Then shut it down and put the sound card back in and all was well.

In other words, are all your cards seated properly? This is not the first time this happens to me (and I think it ended up being a PCI (sound) card more then once).

Then again, if you had Chem help you I bet you have tried all this and more....

This can happen from something shorting out.

I would try pulling everything out and giving it a good cleaning while you are at it. Then put it all back together make sure nothing is touching the case that shouldn't be and see what happens.
