If the option is there you should always use the in game settings. There are certain optimizations done that allow better quality or higher performance when using the games settings.
Forcing through the driver panal should be a last resort.
BTW, its hard to believe you get acceptable FPS with 8x since this is super sampling, which samples the entire screen, where as MS (multi-sampling, and the standard version of AA used) only samples certain parts. Providing nearly the same IQ withouth nearly that large of a performance hit.
Nvidia only supports MSAA on 2x and 4x, ATi supports it on 2x, 4x, and 6x. You can also force Transparancy ,and Adaptive (something, its just AA on alpha textures) for both cards. TR refers to Nvidia's method, and Adaptive to ATi's.
Nvidia only supports TR on its newest Geforce 7 series, where as you can get support (officialy on X1K and through registry hack on lower cards) of AA on every ATi since the 9700 Pro.
So, after all of that. You should use in game settings.
