I know this might be a stupid ? for all you gurus out there but , has anyone tried a dual monitor setup with different sizes? Will it work?
I ask this cause im gonna buy a 20.1 widescreen very soon and was wondering if i can (i know it will look funny) run my 17 as a secondary?

Yes, yes you can. Your vid card has to support it though.
BTW I am posting this from my MacBook Pro from an external monitor and both are different resolutions.

Yes it'll work.
Dual monitors is independent on the size. Though you might have to place the secondary on the right side only, I've found it to be a pain in the *** to get Nvidia drivers to handle a left sided secondary monitor (you could make it the main, but then you'd have to use it for games which defeats the purpose of the new monitor.
As for a 20.1 inch widescreen, only one good choice right now and that's the ViewSonic VX2025WM. Great monitor and can hade for under $330, which is a great price for what it offers.
Newegg is currently out of stock for them, but they should be coming back soon and could be at the other usual places.

Never had a problem with the 2nd monitor with Nvidia. Been working well for years.

as others have said, it works fine.
You will want to get the tops of the monitors level as best you can.

You have it on the left or right?
I've done the dual monitor thing with both ATi and Nvidia. At the time with ATi I had it on the right so I'm not sure if they have the left side issue. When I tried it with Nvidia I wanted the secondary on the left, which was a no go for some reason. I went through tons of menu's, it just would not work at all.
By not working was: It thought the monitor was on the right side no matter what. So if I moved the cursor over to the left it hit a dead end, moving it to the right moved the cursor to the left side monitor.

Hey, it looks better to have 2 monitors same size,
as long as u have dvi
doesn't matter on what side u put it u can always change clone/horizontal/vertical/wide screen monitor.

Two people at work use dual monitors
ATI card - Extra monitor on the left
NVidia - Extra Monitor on the right. Couldn't get it to the left (But I didn't try it. Another employee did and he isn't stupid by any means.)

You can put the extra monitor on the left with an nvidia. I usually keep it on the right, but just put it on the left to check. In the settings box(under display properties), drag the number 2 monitor wherever you want it. (top, bottom, left or right).

Ok, three related questions. 1. Can I use a CRT and LCD for a dual set up? 2. Do the two monitors stretch out your desktop or can you/do you have two desktops? Also, when you say left and right, is this looking at the card or looking at the front of the computer.
