X1950Pro still appears the best bang for buck?
Looking toward the future a tad, and will allow me to play CSS at 1280x1024 to look better on my 19inch LCD.
My 6600GT does ok at 1024x768 with CSS but with TF2 coming out soon, and maybe other games like Crysis or UT3 I think the 1950Pro might be something to get since prices have been falling fast. I have seen them for $149 CAN now for the AT 256MB model.
Anything else even come close?

Nothing in that price range beats it in performance. I don't consider it really worth waiting for anything at this point if you want to stick to that price range.

Yeah $250 CAN is the most I would want to spend and it will simply be my AMD 3000 OC to 2.25GHz with DFI nforce Ultra board that is running it. Hopefully a great match...

Yeah, I'd say it would be a good upgrade for you. I'd suggest strongly to go with the 512MB version over the 256MB. That'll certainly help extend the life a bit further.

I was thinking of doing the same thing as I just dont feel the need nor do I want to spend the cash to upgrade to pci-e right now.
will it be that much of a noticable difference over a 256mb 6800gt?

Well yes for the most part, you can find them in AGP too. Though a bit more expensive.

You think the 512 is really worth an extra $30 if the highest resolution I will go is 1280x1024? Love to buy them both and try, but the place with the 512MB version is not a big box store so not easy to return

Yes, I really do think its worth going with the 512MB version. Trying now with a difference between might be hard, but considering this is suppose to last you awhile even minor future proofing would be wise to invest in. You'll quickly find yourself running out of video memory in games like Crysis and UT3 if you happen to like them. Even TF2 will be pretty demanding, animation quality extremely good, etc.
